Mission San Xavier del Bac

My sister, Andrea, came for a week visit on April 13th.  We had plenty of things for her see.  One of the first was the Mission.  It is located just south of Tucson city limits and about 18 miles north of where we are staying at Green Valley.  The plaque explains the Mission nicely.
In addition, when it was finished, it was actually part of Spain.  After Mexican independence in 1821, it became part of Mexico.  Than, after the Gadsden Purchase in 1854, it became part of the U.S.
Andrea (L) and Caroline at the
front entrance.

View from the west.

Easy to see why it is called
'The White Dove of the Desert.'

Earliest known photo of the
mission: from the early 1870's.

A courtyard in the back.

The main chapel area.

The choir loft.

Aren't they just sweet ?

This road runner was in the
parking lot.  It is a good size
bird; about 22" long.

Flowering cactus along one of
the walkways (and last 3 photos).
